Their story begins over twelve years ago when Kenya
(writer/vocalist/alto) and Chanda (writer/vocalist/tenor), met in
Houston, Texas. Becoming fast friends, and discovering a mutual love
for gospel music, the two soon thereafter began singing together in a
gospel group based in Oklahoma City. The next ten years would bring
about several transitions and periods of growth. In 1999, Nerissa, a
powerful soprano, joined the group presented to you at this time.
After realizing the desire and potential to do greater works, Set Aside decided to record a demo and did so in July, 2001, live at downtown Oklahoma City's Stage Center. From the bluesy sounds of "Take it Away" (Chanda Graham) to the contemporary and soulful feel of "When God Calls" (Arr. Chanda Graham) an arrangement of Atlantic Starr's "When Love Calls," their tight harmonies and unique, interpretive intonations, demonstrate the array of musical gifts bestowed upon the group. Set Aside has ministered all across the State of Oklahoma, in Texas, New York, and twice at the Gospel Music Workshop of America's National Conventions held in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Set Aside opened for award winning artists such as Dorinda Clark-Cole, Karen Clark-Sheard, Kim Burrell, as well as The Truthettes, and Bobby Jones & New Life. Set Aside is currently slated to open for Stellar Award winning artist, Smokie Norful in September, 2003. On Thanksgiving weekend 2001, Set Aside enthusiastically shared the stage with Donnie McClurkin at his First Annual Back To Holiness Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Not only was Set Aside chosen from among hundreds of artists across the United States to participate in the New Artist Showcase, but upon hearing Set Aside's soul stirring rendition of "Lord You Keep Blessing Me," Mr. McClurkin requested that the selection, performed by Set Aside, be included on his newly released The Best of New Artist Showcase Back To Holiness 2001 Compilation CD. Set Aside was privileged to open up the Statewide Jamfest 2001 which was sponsored by a local urban formatted radio station, KVSP. The JamFest hosted 20 of the hottest urban, R&B and hip-hop artists in the nation. This was the first time in the history of the annual JamFest that a gospel act performed. Set Aside was also the featured artist alongside Bishop Carlton Pearson, featured guest speaker, at the first annual "Soul Awakening Conference" hosted by Perry Publishing & Broadcasting and Judah Christian Assembly. At the 2002 meeting of the Gospel Music Workshop of America held in Detroit, Michigan, Set Aside had the privilege of ministering alongside Carnell Murrell and the incomparable Whitfield Company at Dr. Charles Fold's Chapter Representative Luncheon. Lisa Collins, Billboard Columnist and publisher of L.A. Focus on the Word and the Gospel Music Industry Round-up, was present at this event. After hearing Set Aside's performance of "Lord You Keep Blessing Me", Lisa Collins was moved to invite Set Aside to perform at L.A. Focus on the Word's Fifth Annual First Ladies High Tea. Set Aside shared the stage with Michelle Williams of platinum recording artist Destiny's Child. Beverly "BAM" Crawford, who was the Mistress of Ceremonies of the Tea, was so moved by Set Aside's performance that she booked Set Aside to minister at her Young Adult service that very evening. Look out for these young ladies who are destined to take the gospel music industry by storm. |
